NORTHWEST INDIANA'S RECOVERY LIKELY WILL PROCEED SLOWLY AND GRADUALLY; JOBLESS RATE DROPS TO 9.4% IN SEPT. '09 

    Evidence is mounting that Northwest Indiana's recovery from the deep recession will proceed slowly and gradually. Like other regions, NWI experienced a moderate decrease in the jobless rate to 9.4 percent in September 2009, a decline from 10.0 percent during the previous month.
    Each of the region's seven counties recorded a drop in unemployment during September '09. Indiana saw the statewide rate fall to 9.2 percent in September from 9.7 percent the previous month, although the comparable rate during the benchmark of September 2008 was 5.8 percent.  Meanwhile, the U.S. jobless rate stood at 9.5 percent in September '09 compared to 9.6 percent the previous month and 6.0 percent in September '08.
